Contract Details For Andy Dalton’s Six-Year Extension With Bengals

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has some contract details for Andy Dalton‘s new six-year extension with the Bengals.

  • Florio adds that the actual value of Dalton’s extension is $96 million with the difference being made up in incentives.
  • According to Florio, Dalton receives a $12 million signing bonus as well as a $5 million roster bonus that will be due in three days.
  • Jason La Canfora mentions that Dalton will make $22 million in total by next February.
  • Dalton will make $16 million per year over the course of the six new years added to his contract.
  • The incentives included in his contract are tied to leading the Bengals to the divisional round, the conference title game, and the Super Bowl, according to Albert Breer.

Yearly breakdown, per Mike Florio

  • 2014: $986,000 base salary, $12M signing bonus, $5M roster bonus.
  • 2015: $3M (non-guaranteed) base salary, $4M roster bonus.
  • 2016: $10.5M, $200,000 workout bonuses.
  • 2017: $13.1M, $200,000 workout bonuses.
  • 2018: $13.7M, $200,000 workout bonuses.
  • 2019: $16M, $200,000 workout bonuses.
  • 2020: $17.5M, $200,000 workout bonuses.

This deal appears to be similar to Colin Kaepernick‘s contract as Dalton will receive some decent money in the first six months of the agreement, but the Bengals will still have cap space to work with in the coming years as they try to address the contracts of WR A.J. Green and LB Vontaze Burfict.

Dalton, 26, was entering the final year of his rookie contract and would have made just $986,027 for the 2014 season. He’s led Cincinnati to the playoffs in each of his first three years in the league, but has yet to win a single postseason game.

Last year, Dalton completed 61.9 percent of his passes for a career-high 4,296 yards 33 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
