Contract Details For Bucs DT Gerald McCoy’s New Seven-Year Extension

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk provides more details regarding Buccaneers’ DT Gerald McCoy’s brand new seven-year, $98 million extension.

McCoy will receive $14.757 million upon signing the agreement, which does not include the $5.2 million he has earned over the coruse of the first seven weeks of the 2014 season.

Following the Super Bowl, $32.257 million will be fully guaranteed. The remainder of McCoy’s $51.5 million becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2016 league year, according to Florio.

If Tampa Bay were to, for some reason, release McCoy after the 2015 season, he will have made $37.2 million in total for two seasons. In total, McCoy’s contract includes $95.2 million in new money and roster bonuses.

This means McCoy will average $13.6 million over the course of seven years, which makes him the highest paid defensive tackle in the league, for now.

Lions DT Ndamukong Suh becomes the best defensive lineman who could be available in next year’s free agent market. Should Suh be allowed to test free agency, there is a decent chance that he could surpass these figures, especially if there are multiple bidders for his services.

McCoy has appeared in five games and recorded 17 tackles, two sacks and a pass defense this season.

Last year, Pro Football Focus rated McCoy as the No.1 defensive tackle in the league by a wide margin and he currently sits atop their 2014 rankings as well.

We had McCoy listed as the No. 2 player in our Top 25 – 2015 Free Agents list.
