Contract Extension Between Panthers & LB Thomas Davis Still A “Work In Progress”

Panthers veteran LB Thomas Davis was recently asked about the status of negotiations regarding a potential contract extension. According to Davis, it’s still a “work in progress.”

It’s a work in progress,” Davis said, via the Charlotte Observer. “It’s something that both sides are working on, trying to get it done. We’re in a good place right now. It’s not something I’m stressing over, and I’m sure they’re not stressing over. It’ll eventually get done.”

Carolina wound up taking LB Shaq Thompson with their first-round pick, which gives them a long-term replacement to Davis. However, Davis isn’t concerned about the situation and instead thinks they’ll make a solid linebacker tandem next year.

“I’m not naive, and I’m not crazy,” Davis said of Thompson eventually replacing him. “Eventually, there’s going to come a day where Shaq takes over the reins and he’s going to take over for my position. But for right now and the near future, it’s really set up to where you put three really fast, athletic guys on the field and we’re going to go out dominate together.

Davis, 32, reworked his contract with the Panthers last year, which leaves his in position to make a base salary of $7.25 million for the 2015 season. As part of the reworked deal, three voidable years were added to the agreement to lessen the cap figures.

As things stand right now, Davis has a $10 million cap figure for the 2015 season, so an agreement on an extension would free up some additional cap room for the Panthers.

In 2014, appeared in 15 games and recorded 100 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a recovery and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 5 outside linebacker in a 403 defense out of 40 qualifying players.
