Contract Extension Coming For Miami Dolphins LT Jake Long?

With their selection of Stanford tackle Jonathan Martin in the Draft, there were rumblings that the Miami Dolphins selected him as Jake Long‘s successor. Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland dismissed those rumors, but they most likely stemmed from the fact that Long has yet to receive a long-term contract extension from the team.

Linebacker Cameron Wake got a four-year extension on Sunday, which means that Miami won’t have to worry about using the franchise tag on him in 2013. Long is set to make $11.2 million this season.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel tweets that $25 million would be the starting point for guaranteed money when Long and the Dolphins begin negotiations, that sum coming from his salary in 2012 and 2013 if he is franchised.

An extension for the first overall pick in 2008 is not urgent. Long has experienced some health problems, which could suggest the Dolphins want to wait and see if he can have an injury-free 2012.
