Contract Extension Coming For Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson Following The Season?

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York expects the Jets to discuss a long-term contract extension with DE Muhammad Wilkerson following the season.

According to Cimini, Wilkerson could be the first “mega-contract of the John Idzik era.” Cimini suggests that they could discuss a deal that would average something close to the current franchise-tag amount of $11.2 million per season.

Wilkerson, 23, has already established himself as one of the best 3-4 defensive ends in the league and he has just season remaining on his rookie deal.

“I think he’s right there with the top defensive linemen in this league right now that aren’t named J.J. Watt,” said HC Rex Ryan.

As of now, Wilkerson is rated as the No. 8 3-4 defensive end in the league by Pro Football Focus. He has tallied 19 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles in the team’s first five games of the season.
