Contract Extension For Saints TE Jimmy Graham Probably Not Coming Any Time Soon

Dan Parr of Pro Football Weekly writes that despite the fact that Saints TE Jimmy Graham has quickly become one of the best players at his respective position,  it’s “difficult to envision” the Saints addressing his contract at any point in the near future.

Graham, 25, is currently under contract through the 2013 season, with base salaries of $540,000 and $575,000 to be paid out during this time, so the Saints are certainly getting bargain here. The fact that Drew Brees has yet to be re-signed, suggests that New Orleans will most likely hold off on rewarding players that have already out performed their current contracts under some point down the road. There’s no question that getting Graham lock into a long-term agreement would be wise a move on the part of the Saints, but it may not happen until he’s closer to reaching the free agent market in 2014.
