Cowboys Bench Brandon Weeden, Starting Matt Cassel In Week 7

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the Cowboys have informed QB Brandon Weeden that they’re going to start Matt Cassel in Week 7’s game against the Giants.

Yesterday, Jason Cole of B/R reported that Dallas was “highly likely” to make a change at quarterback and go with Cassel, so this doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Especially when you consider that HC Jason Garrett and VP Stephen Jones both hinted that they were leaning towards benching Weeden.

If there was ever a time to make a quarterback change, it would be this week, seeing as they’ll have additional time to prefer for their Week 7 game against the Giants.

Weeden, 31, is in the final year of his  two-year, $1.23 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season.

Over the course of four games, Weeden has thrown for 739 yards while completing 72.4 percent of his passes to go along with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 21 quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.

Cassel, 33, was traded to the Cowboys in a deal that netted the Bills a 2017 fifth-round pick for him and a 2017 seventh-round pick.

Last year, Cassel appeared in three games for the Vikings and completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 425 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions.
