Cowboys Among A “Handful” Of Interested Teams In QB Nick Foles, Could Sign As Soon As Today

Update:

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said the team has had talks with the agent for free agent QB Nick Foles as a potential replacement for Kellen Moore, per Todd Archer.

  • According to Jones, the Cowboys have other options they are pursuing as well via a potential trade.
  • Jones did say that their goal is to have a replacement in place sooner rather than later, but they want to get the decision right.
  • Interestingly enough, Mike Garafolo says that his “hunch right now” is that Foles doesn’t head to Dallas.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, the Cowboys are just one of a “handful” of NFL teams pursuing free agent QB Nick Foles.

  • Garafolo adds that Foles could sign with a new team as soon as today.

For what it’s worth, the Vikings and Bills have been mentioned as potential teams to watch for Foles along with the Cowboys.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that there’s “legitimate interest” between the Cowboys and free agent QB Nick Foles.

“It really seems they’re going to have to take a hard look at the veteran quarterback market and the name to watch is Nick Foles,” Rapoport said Wednesday. “There is legitimate interest. I’m told the Cowboys — that would be the name if they are going to bring in a backup.”

Rapoport added that Dallas has already done their homework on Foles from when the Rams were fielding trade offers for him.

They did work on him when the Rams were trying to shop him,” Rapoport said. “There’s a lot of mutual interest there for the Cowboys and Nick Foles.

  • Ed Werder reports that the Cowboys haven’t inquired about Buccaneers backup QB Mike Glennon, despite speculation he could be a potential trade target for the Cowboys.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the Cowboys are “considering” signing free agent QB Nick Foles following the news that backup QB Kellen Moore suffered a fractured right fibula.

According to Werder, the Cowboys are also expected to explore the trade market for a backup quarterback.

In regards to trade options, Werder specifically mentions Browns QB Josh McCown and Buccaneers backup QB Mike Glennon as two names worth keeping an eye on.

Last night, Adam Schefter reported that the Rams discussed a potential Foles trade with the Bills and Cowboys before they elected to release him last week.

Fourth-round pick Dak Prescott took over for Moore during the practice, but there’s obviously some question as to whether he would be their best option to open the season as Tony Romo‘s backup.

Last year, the Cowboys couldn’t buy a win with any of their backup quarterbacks, so it seems like they wouldn’t take any chances this time around. Foles is clearly the best available quarterback right now and you could make the case that Dallas could be his best landing spot, considering there aren’t any starting quarterbacks jobs available right now.

Recent reports have said that the Cowboys were among the team’s to watch for Foles, along with the Bills and Vikings. However, others have denied the Bills’ reported interest.

Foles, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Eagles back in 2012. After three years in Philadelphia, Foles was sent to the Rams in a trade from the Eagles that shipped Sam Bradford to Philadelphia. He had one year remaining on his rookie contract when the Rams signed him to a two-year, $24 million extension back in August of last year.

In 2015, Foles completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 2,052 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 36 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
