Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer Hoping To Avoid Season-Ending Surgery

Ian Rapoport reports that Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer is currently “considering his options,” regarding his injured knee and is “hoping to avoid surgery.”

This news reportedly comes from Spencer’s agent, Jordan Woy, who announced earlier in the week that Spencer was in undergoing season-ending knee surgery.

While there’s still a chance he could return this season, it’s more likely that his 2013 season is already over. We’ll have more as the news is available.

It’s just unfortunate to see players go down with season-ending injuries while their in the midst of a contract year.

Spencer, 29, was playing out the season under the franchise tag, so this is hardly the type of thing he was hoping to have happen before he secures a long-term contract. Last season, he was incredible for Dallas. He tallied 95 tackles, 11 sacks, three batted passes and two forced fumbles, while playing outside linebacker in their 3-4 defense.

The Cowboys will most likely turn to George Selvie at defensive end with Spencer out for the year.

We currently have Spencer listed as the No. 20 player in our Top 50 – 2014 Free Agents list, but that figures to change in the coming days.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters on Tuesday that DE Anthony Spencer could be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, per Nick Eatman.

“It’s a real setback,” Jones told 105.3 “The Fan” in Dallas on Tuesday morning. “It could be out for the season.”

Jones added that Spencer need need microfracture surgery to repair his injured knee.
