According to Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are expected to exercise DB Byron Jones‘ fifth-year option for the 2019 season.

Jones will make a $6.17 million salary for the 2019 season under the fifth-year option. It’s worth mentioning that the fifth-year option is only guaranteed for injury and won’t prevent the two parties from working on a long-term extension in the next year or so.

Jones, 25, is a former first-round pick out of Connecticut by the Cowboys in the 2015 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $8.601 million rookie contract and is set to earn a base salary of $1,012,991 million in 2018 including a $595,000 roster bonus.

He was originally drafted as a cornerback but was converted to safety later on during his rookie season. According to Todd Archer of ESPN, Dallas may be planning to use him as a full-time corner this year.

In 2017, Jones appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and recorded 82 total tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, five pass defenses, and scored one defensive touchdown. Pro Football Focus graded him as the No. 54 overall safety out of 120 qualifying players.
