ESPN’s Todd Archer mentioned during an interview with SiriusXM’s Mike Clay that the Cowboys will have a tough time carrying four running backs on their 53-man roster this year, which could lead to veteran RB Darren McFadden possibly being on the trading block.
The idea of McFadden being on the trading block came up a few months ago, but Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said they have no plans to make either McFadden or Alfred Morris available for trade.
McFadden was recently placed on the active/non-football injury list after he broke his elbow in an accident at his home around a month ago.
Some have mentioned that McFadden could be worked into the mix, even if first-round RB Ezekiel Elliott is able to win the starting job. However, it’s hard to say what kind of role Morris will have for the Cowboys in 2016.
McFadden, 28, is in the final year of his two-year, $3 million contract that included a $200,000 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $1.25 million for the 2016 season before testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent next year.
According to OverTheCap.com, trading will free up $2.05 million in available cap space while creating $100,000 in dead money.
In 2015, McFadden appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and ran for 1,089 yards on 239 carries (4.6 YPC) to go along with 40 receptions for 328 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 42 running back out of 69 qualifying players.
