Cowboys Have No Plans To Trade RBs Darren McFadden Or Alfred Morris

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said Thursday that they have no plans to trade either Darren McFadden or Alfred Morris, despite using the No. 4 overall pick on Ezekiel Elliott a few weeks ago, via Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram.

As of now, McFadden has been working as the team’s No. 1 running back with Elliott seeing time with the second unit. Dallas has said that they want Elliott to earn the starting job this summer, rather than hand it to him due to his draft status.

McFadden figures to be worked into the mix, even if Elliott is able to win the starting job. However, it’s hard to say what kind of role Morris will have for the Cowboys in 2016.

Dallas also has Lance Dunbar and Darius Jackson under contract, which means he very well could be competing for a roster spot this summer. If the odds are against Morris securing a roster, it would make sense for the Cowboys to at least see if there’s a deal out there, considering that he has a reasonable contract.

McFadden, 28, is in the final year of his two-year, $3 million contract that included a $200,000 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $1.25 million for the 2016 season before testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent next year.

In 2015, McFadden appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and ran for 1,089 yards on 239 carries (4.6 YPC) to go along with 40 receptions for 328 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 42 running back out of 69 qualifying players.

Morris, 27, wound up signing a two-year, $3.5 million contract with the Cowboys back in March after finding limited interest as an unrestricted free agent. He’ll make a base salary of $1.2 million in 2016 and another $1 million in 2017.

Last year, Morris appeared all 16 games for the Redskins and ran for 751 yards on 202 carries (3.7 YPC) to go along with 10 receptions for 55 yards receiving and one touchdown. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 40 running back out of 69 qualifying players.
