Cowboys Expected To Offer Dez Bryant A Deal That Includes Voidable Guarantees

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Cowboys are expected to include “broad language” in their offer to WR Dez Bryant that would void future fully-guaranteed payments in the event he’s arrested, incarcerated, or even detained by police.

Sources tell Florio that Dallas has already added this language to the contracts of first-round pick DB Byron Jones and fellow rookie OL La’El Collins.

With the deadline to negotiate with franchise players coming tomorrow afternoon, Florio mentions that it would not be surprising to see Dallas make one last at locking Dez up and offering him a deal that would be “hard for him to reject.”

Florio adds that their offer would likely tie fully-guaranteed money to the language that would give them an out if Bryant is involved in any off-the-field issues.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Cowboys have upped their offer to franchise WR Dez Bryant in recent weeks.

Dallas is reportedly willing to pay Bryant $12.8 million per year, which is an improvement upon their original $10 million offer over the course of six years. Bryant is reportedly seeking a larger annual salary than Calvin Johnson‘s $16+ million, according to Rapoport.

One source tells Rapoport that the two parties still have a “long way to go” before any agreement is in place.

Rapoport adds that the Cowboys still aren’t buying Bryant’s threat to hold out of training camp or the regular season for a new contract. However, a source close to Bryant tells Rand Getlin that he’s serious.

The two sides have less than 24 hours to work out an agreement before the deadline to negotiate with franchised players has passed.

Bryant, 26, received the Cowboys franchise tag a few months ago and stands to make a salary of $12.823 million fully guaranteed for the 2015 season.

In 2014, caught 88 passes for 1,320 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns over the course of 16 games for Dallas last year. Pro Football Focus has Bryant rated as the No. 2 wide receiver in the league.
