Cowboys G La’El Collins To Get 2nd & 3rd Opinions On Toe Injury

Update:

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that Cowboys G La’El Collins is seeking a “second and third opinion on his toe.

  • Anderson mentions that the possibility of undergoing surgery is still being reevaluated.
  • This morning, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it will be a “pain thing” for Collins, and he most likely will not undergo surgery. (Mike Garafolo)
  • David Chao points out that if Collins has a severe turf toe injury that includes a torn plantar plate with retraction, it would require surgery and possibly cost him the remainder of the season. However, if Collins’ plantar plate is torn, but still in place, he would be looking at a timetable of 4-8 weeks.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the Cowboys are placing G La’El Collins on injured reserve as he needs surgery on his injured foot.

  • According to Clarence Hill, Collins is likely to miss 8-10 weeks, but the hope is that he can return later on in the year or for a playoff run.
  • Ian Rapoport adds that Collins is believed to have a ligament tear in his foot. Rapoport mentions that the plan is for Collins to get a second opinion to determine if he needs surgery.
  • David Moore has been told that Collins could be out as long as 10-12 weeks.

The Cowboys look smart for electing to hold onto Ronald Leary now that Collins will miss a large portion of the season.

Collins, 23, wound up going undrafted out of LSU, but ultimately signed a three-year, $1.599 million contract that is fully guaranteed and included a $21,000 signing bonus. He stands to make bases salaries of $526,750 and $616,750 over the next two years before testing the open market as a restricted free agent.

In 2015, Collins appeared in 12 games and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 51 guard out of 81 qualifying players.
