Johnny Manziel Has Reportedly Told People Cowboys, Rams & Chiefs Are Interested In Him

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Johnny Manziel has told people that the Cowboys, Rams, and Chiefs are all interested in him.

However, Werder adds that the Chiefs do not actually have interest in pursuing Manziel, despite his belief that they could be an option.

On Tuesday, Browns VP of football operations Sashi Brown released a statement regarding Manziel that implies that they plan to release him at the start of the 2016 league year.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media has confirmed that this, in fact, the Browns’ plan, so Manziel should be available in time for free agency.

There has been plenty of speculation that the Cowboys could have interest in signing Manziel to be Tony Romo‘s backup. Owner Jerry Jones admitted previously that he wanted to draft Manziel a few years ago.

However, this is by no means a certainty, and the Cowboys will have plenty of options to consider in free agency and the draft.

The Rams will be in the market for a new quarterback, but their current situation could complicate their ability to bring in another quarterback. They signed Nick Foles to an extension, which means they would take a sizable cap hit to cut him and they’ve already said they hope to re-sign Case Keenum.

Beyond that, the Rams used a third-round pick on Sean Mannion last year.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media isn’t sure the Cowboys or Texans would actually be interested, despite them coming up as options.

I’m not sure either of those [Texas] teams is actually interested in Manziel, mainly because of his off-the-field behavior,” Rapoport said Tuesday. “If he cleans it up, I think they could be. But at this point, I would not expect interest from either of those teams for Manziel in his current state.”

Manziel, 23, is in the second year of his four-year, $8,247,250 rookie contract that included $6,702,625 guaranteed. He’ll make a base salary of $794,936 this season and another $1,169,872 in 2016.

This season, Manziel appeared in nine games and thrown for 1,500 yards while completing 57.8 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Manziel has also ran for 230 yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 31 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Manziel as the news is available.
