Cowboys Release DT Amobi Okoye

The Dallas Cowboys announced Wednesday that they’ve released DT Amobi Okoye.

Okoye, 27, is a former first-round pick of the Texans back in 2007. He played out his rookie contract before signing on with Bears as an unrestricted free agent in March of 2013. The Cowboys later signed him to a two-year agreement in May of last year.

He hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2012 season when he was playing for the Bears. Since then, he has been attempting a comeback following a serious medical condition.

Okoye contracted an autoimmune syndrome called anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis that resulted in a lengthy coma and forced him to miss 17 months of football.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Okoye will free up $870,000 in available cap space while creating no dead money.

Hopefully, Okoye gets another shot with an NFL team in the coming months.
