Cowboys Have Rejected Browns’ “High” Asking Price For QB Josh McCown

Update:

Browns HC Hue Jackson said “there’s nothing” regarding the possibility of trading QB Josh McCown to the Cowboys.

There’s nothing to it as far as we’re concerned. I feel good that he’s here,” via Mary Kay Cabot.

Ed Werder updates the trade talks between the Cowboys and Browns by reporting that the two sides discussed a trade for QB Josh McCown. However, the Browns prefer to keep and made that clear with their high asking price.

According to Werder, the Cowboys have declined to meet the Browns’ asking price for McCown as of now.

According to Ed Werder, the Cowboys’ pursuit QB Josh McCown hasn’t ended. A team source tells Werder: “Nothing’s out. Just no movement.”

  • Jason Cole reports that the Browns are open to trading McCown, but will not give him away.

Ed Werder is now reporting that the Cowboys are no longer in a rush to acquire a veteran backup quarterback in a trade.

Instead, Dallas plans to give more reps to fourth-round QB Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers with Tony Romo getting every third day off.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that have moved on to pursue trade options including Browns veteran QB Josh McCown now that Nick Foles has agreed to sign with the Chiefs.

  • However, Werder’s sources have said that the Browns are reluctant to part with McCown.
  • Ian Rapoport confirms that the Cowboys are expected to turn their attention to McCown.

Last night, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Cowboys have discussed internally the idea of possibly pursing a trade for Buccaneers backup QB Mike Glennon, so that could be something to watch too.

If the Cowboys want to sign a free agent instead of parting with some sort of compensation for a backup quarterback, some have tossed out Jimmy Clausen as someone who could make sense for Dallas.

McCown, 36, signed a three-year, $14 million contract that includes $6.25 million guaranteed with the Browns back in March of last year. He stands to make base salaries of $4.375 million (2016) and $3.625 million (2017) over the duration of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading McCown will free up $3,708,332 in available cap space while creating $1,333,334 in dead money.

In 2015, McCown appeared in eight games and threw for 2,109 yards while completing 63.7 percent of his passes to go along with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 29 quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding the Cowboys and their options at quarterback as the news is available.
