Contract Details For Cowboys K Dan Bailey’s Six-Year Extension

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that the Cowboys K Dan Bailey will receive a six-year extension worth $22.5 million.

Bailey receives a $4 million signing bonus to go along with $7.5 millionĀ guaranteed. He’ll have $3.4 million over the course of this deal.

Here’s how Bailey’s deal stacks up with the top kicker contracts:

  • Bears KĀ Robbie Gould:Ā five-years, $17.925M total, $8.85M guaranteed, $3.75M average.
  • Raiders K Sebastian Janikowski:Ā five-years, $18.9M total,Ā $8M guaranteed, $3.775MĀ average
  • Cowboys KĀ Dan Bailey: six years, $22.5M total,Ā $7.5M guaranteed,Ā $3.4 average.

It’s worth noting that only $4.9 million of Gould’s guaranteed figure is fullyĀ guaranteed, according to Overthecap.com.

The DallasĀ Cowboys announced on Thursday that they’ve reached an agreement withĀ restricted free agent KĀ Dan BaileyĀ on a long-term extension that will keep him under team control through the 2020 season.

According to the team’s website, Bailey will makeĀ a little more than $3.3 million per season.

Given that the Cowboys are in bad shape in regards to their cap situation, it makes sense that they would elect to extendĀ Bailey’s contract over several of years, as it allows them to keep hisĀ cap figures at a manageable level.

The key figure here will be the guaranteed cash included in Bailey’s new contract, but it seems unlikely that he will come close to the $8.85 million guaranteed the Bears gave toĀ KĀ Robbie Gould.

Bases on the $3.3 million annual salary, it appears as though Bailey’s guaranteed figure could be close to $4 million, which is what the Buccaneers gave to KĀ Connor Barth.

Bailey, 25, is one the best young kickers in the league. In 2013, he convertedĀ 93.3 percent of his field goal attempts, which was good enough for No. 4 overall in that department. He was alsoĀ 6 of 7 from over 50 yards.

Cowboys VP Stephen Jones told reporters on Wednesday that they areĀ in “serious contract negotiations” withĀ restricted free agent K Dan Bailey regarding a long-term deal, per Brandon George.

It’s hard to speculate as to what the Cowboys offering Bailey, but he could end up receiving a top-five contract given his age and recent success. The Bears recently signed K Robbie Gould to aĀ five-year deal worth $17.925 million that included $8.85 million guaranteed, so I sure Bailey and his agent are using that as a high point for negotiations.

IfĀ Bailey was able to get $4.5 – $5 million guaranteed in his next contract, that would be pretty good.
