Cowboys Waive FB Rod Smith, Could Promote CB Leon McFadden

Todd Archer of ESPN reports that the Cowboys have placed FB Rod Smith on waivers Thursday to clear a roster spot for a cornerback.

  • According to Archer, the Cowboys may end up calling up CB Leon McFadden from their practice squad.

Smith, 24, wound up signing on with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State following this year’s NFL draft. He was unable to make the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason, but he was later added to their practice squad.

The Seahawks signed Smith to their active roster in October of last year before waiving him a few days later. The Cowboys wound up claiming him and he’s been in Dallas ever since.

This season, Smith has appeared in seven games and caught one pass for four yards and no touchdowns for the Cowboys.

McFadden, 25, is a former third-round pick of the Browns back in 2013. He lasted just over a year in Cleveland before he was waived and later claimed by the Jets.

After brief stints with the 49ers and Cardinals, McFadden signed to the Giants’ active roster last year and returned to the team on a future/reserve contract. However, he was unfortunately among their roster cuts coming out of the preseason.

The Cowboys signed him to their practice squad a few weeks ago.

In 2015, McFadden appeared in two games for the Giants and recorded one tackle and no interceptions.
