Cowboys Won’t Make QB Decision Until Tony Romo’s 100% Healthy

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that a decision regarding who will be the Cowboys starter will come only when Tony Romo is 100 percent healthy and ready to return.

This means that rookie QB Dak Prescott could continue to start for the Cowboys even after their bye, as they wait to see where Romo’s at in his recovery.

According to Rapoport, the Cowboys’ stance is to remain open-minded until they have to make a call on who will be their starter.

Rapoport adds that the sense he gets from the Cowboys’ locker room is that there is more support for Prescott in place as their starting quarterback than making changes for Romo to return as the starter. Rapoport says that Romo hasn’t been around much.

Dallas appears to be leaving the door open more and more for Prescott to remain the starter without specifically saying it.

The Cowboys and Romo were reportedly targeting a Week 8 return, which would come after their bye. As of Thursday, it was eight weeks since Romo sustained a fractured vertebra and he’s expected to ramp up his conditioning and begin throwing soon.

Romo, 36, is in the third year of his seven-year, $119.5 million contract that included $55 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $8.5 million (2016), $14 million (2017), $19.5 million (2018) and $20.5 million (2019).

In 2015, Romo threw for 884 yards while completing 68.6 percent of his passes to go along with five touchdowns and seven interceptions over the course of four games for the Cowboys.

We’ll have more regarding Romo and his return as the news is available.
