According to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, it would be wise for the Cowboys to at least consider the idea of locking up RB DeMarco Murray as long, as he is willing to sign a reasonable contract.
- Archer mentions that the Cowboys “like him a lot,” and it’s clear that they are a better team when he’s healthy and on the field.
- Archer suggests a four-year contract worth $16 million of Murray given that it would keep him under team control until he turns 30 years old.
The recent market value contracts signed by running backs have been underwhelming, which could actually work in Dallas’ favor with Murray.
Donald Brown and Toby Gerhart wound up securing the best contracts for running backs in the free agent market this year. Both players received a three-year deal worth $10.5 million, even though Gerhart edged Brown in full guarantees by just $500,000.
Murray, 26, trigger an escalator in his rookie contract that will increase his base salary from $755,469 to $1.389 million in 2014.
Last season, Murray appeared in 14 games for Dallas and totaled 1,124 yards rushing on 217 carries (5.2 YPC) to go along with 10 combined touchdowns.
