Current Options For Plaxico Burress

Last week ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that the New York Jets and St Louis Rams appear to be the favorites to land former New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress.

Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News seconded the idea of the Burress joining the Jets by writing that it’s “not a surprise the Jets would take such a chance, considering they rolled the dice on two other talented receivers with baggage — Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards — and have been tied to possibly adding another, Randy Moss.

Iyer’s point is well taken. The Jets have brought in not only troubled players but they’ve shown that they’re willing to take a chance on aging veterans like LaDainian Tomlinson and Jason Taylor in recent years. There’s no guarantee that they’ll be able to retain both Holmes and Edwards so they’ll most likely keep options like Moss and Burress open and see how things play out.

Burress will be 34 at the start of NFL season so there will be plenty of questions regarding his playing ability. One advantage that has really helped Burress throughout his career is his size which makes him a favorable match up against many cornerbacks but he’ll have to prove that he can still be an effective wide receiver early on.

Others speculative options could include the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and possibly the Washington Redskins.
