Dallas A “Likely Landing Spot” For Jim Harbaugh Barring A SB Win?

Jason McIntyre of The Big Lead has a great article up that gives a behind-the-scenes look at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine. I highly recommend checking it out.

Buried in McIntyre’s article is a very interesting note regarding 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh and the Dallas Cowboys.

According to McIntyre, NFL people “repeatedly” told him at the Combine that Dallas is “the most likely landing spot” for Harbaugh if he doesn’t win the Super Bowl next year.

This comes just a day after Jason Cole of the National Football Post mentioned that the Miami Dolphins are expected to pursue Harbaugh next year, “barring a Super Bowl win by the 49ers.”

Since Pro Football Talk first reported that the Browns made an attempt to acquire Harbaugh after the season, it’s been almost incredible to see how this story has evolved into existing issues between Harbaugh and the front office, and is now creating buzz about potential landing spots for Harbaugh next year.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee referred to Harbaugh as the “god of discord” in his article posted earlier Tuesday.

  • Barrows writes that Harbaugh and his agent are the “clear winners” in the current situation as the chaos that has been created could be put to rest if the 49ers would just sign him to the contract he’s looking for.
  • Barrows even mentions that the Dolphins and Cowboys could be two teams with “deep pockets” willing to pay Harbaugh the kind of money he’s looking for next year.
  • Barrows adds that the 49ers shouldn’t give in to Harbaugh’s demands because he’ll “never will be content” and “it’s in his nature to create chaos.

In spite of all the reports and speculation regarding Harbaugh, the 49ers have maintained that his contract remains an offseason priority for them. Although, team owner Jed York recently mentioned that they could wait until after the draft to get something worked out.

As for the Cowboys, Jason Garrett is entering the final year of his contract and even though Jerry Jones recently said that he views Garrett as a “long term” head coach of the team, it seems likely that Garrett will need a Ron-Rivera-like season to save his job.

The Cowboys and Dolphins could end up being big spenders when it comes to finding a new head coach next, but San Francisco can put the building speculation to rest by working out a contract extension with Harbaugh at some point before the start of the season.
