Darrelle Revis To The 49ers For Alex Smith?

Here’s another installment of speculative trade ideas for Jets CB Darrelle Revis.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined SPN Radio Tuesday morning and tossed out a speculative trade idea that would involve the Jets sending Revis to the San Francisco 49ers in return for QB Alex Smith and a second round pick, per Jane McManus.

There’s no question that the Jets could use quarterback and Revis represents their best trade asset, so it’s at least a plausible idea.

The 49ers aren’t in desperate need of a cornerback, but turning Smith and a second-round pick into Revis could be enough to persuade them to at least consider the idea.

Revis will be a free agent following the season, but even if they were to allow him to leave following during free agency; they would still recoup a third-round compensatory pick for him. That means, unlike other teams that would most likely have to include a first-round pick and have the parameters of a long-term deal in place as part of a trade for Revis, San Francisco could instead view this as a one-year rental.

Revis is reportedly seeking a deal that would pay him $16 million annually and would include $50 million in guarantees, so it’s safe to say that his contract expectations will have an impact on his overall trade value.
