Darrelle Revis Reports To Jets Minicamp

Despite the ongoing speculation that New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis could holdout of offseason workouts in the hopes of securing a long-term contract from the team, Manish Mehta reports that Revis reported for Jets minicamp today.

While there’s still a chance that he could elect to sit out of the team’s upcoming training camp, this is at least an encouraging sign that he’s willing to honor his contract.

Rich Cimini of ESPN reports that in a recent interview with the Star Ledger of Newark, Jets CB Darrelle Revis continued singing the same song he has all offseason – he’s not unhappy with his contract and wants to retire as a member of Gang Green. Despite maintaining this position, he says he won’t commit to showing up in time for the start of training camp.

The last time Revis held out, it was before the 2010 season, and he held out for five weeks for a contract extension. Revis made $32.5 million over the first two years of the extension he signed in 2010, but will make only $13.5 million during the final two.

Widely regarded as the best cornerback in the NFL the last couple of years, the Jets have to make a decision soon on whether or not they’re going to extend Revis, because if he has another top flight season this year, they will have to pay in him next season -when they will be approximately $19 million over the projected salary cap- or risk a bidding war with the 31 other teams when Revis reaches free agency. Putting New York in even more of a financial bind is the fact that they can’t use the franchise tag on Revis in 2014, limiting the team’s options.
