David Akers Will Remain The 49ers’ Kicker For The Super Bowl

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that David Akers will remain the team’s kicker despite missing a field goal against the Falcons.

San Francisco parted ways with Billy Cundiff which, according to Maiocco, means that he would be ineligible to play in the Super Bowl if they were to re-sign him this week. The 49ers will have to move forward with a shaky-at-best Akers and hope that he doesn’t become a liability for them when it counts most.

Jim Harbaugh announced that David Akers will be the team’s kicker for this weekend’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers, per Cam Inman.

Harbaugh added that Billy Cundiff will remain on their roster despite losing out to Akers this week.

It’s been a pretty interesting year for Akers to say the least. He’s gone from tying the NFL record for the longest field goal in league history to missing a staggering 13 regular season field goals this year.

The good news is that the Packers don’t have much of an advantage with their Mason Crosby as their kicker given that he too has had a terrible season.
