Derek Carr Could Push Matt Schaub For The Starting Job During Training Camp

Just a few weeks ago, Jim Trotter of ESPN reported that Raiders HC Dennis Allen is “firmly committed” to starting veteran QB Matt Schaub this season, despite using a second-round pick on Fresno State QB Derek Carr.

However, Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports that “there is an internal belief” that Carr will push Schaub for the starting job in training camp,

According to Breer, Carr has already displayed the “talent and intelligence” to start right out of the gate in his first year in the league.

Breer adds that, for now, Schaub will continue to take the Raiders first-team snaps during workouts, but this could change in the coming weeks.

Oakland acquired Schaub from the Texans in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick that they used on RB Alfred Blue.

Schaub later agreed to restructure contract with the Raiders and will now make $8 million for the 2014 season, but his deal doesn’t include any guaranteed money beyond that.

The Raiders have given every indication that Schaub is their guy for the entire season, but it would be hard to sit Carr if he ends up outplaying Schaub during offseason workouts.

Last year, Schaub appeared in 10 games and completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 2,310 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also had a problem with throwing pick-sixes.
