Jay Cutler “Leaning Heavily” Toward Staying Retired, Despite Dolphins’ Interest

Update:

Jeff Darlington reports that Jay Cutler is “leaning heavily toward staying retired” despite the recent interest from the Dolphins.

  • According to Darlington, Cutler giving this situation a “long, hard look” because this situation was the only scenario he thought could convince him to return to the NFL.
  • However, even though this is likely the best scenario for him to return, Darlington says it’s looking like it still won’t sway him.
  • Even so, Darlington cautions that nothing is 100 percent right now and HC Adam Gase can be very convincing.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Dolphins have been in contact with QB Jay Cutler’s reps and have had discussions about a potential deal. However, nothing has been agreed to at this point in time.

Rapoport adds that Cutler is considered to be the Dolphins’ “top choice” at quarterback right now.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have already reached out to multiple veteran quarterbacks including Jay Cutler now that Ryan Tannehill is expected to miss an undetermined amount of time with a knee injury.

According to Salguero, Dolphins HC Adam Gase has personally been in contact with Cutler the past two days and he appears to be the “leading candidate” to the join Miami. However, Salguero adds that there are some obstacles in place such as the team wanting a definitive plan for Tannell moving forward.

The Dolphins are also speaking to other quarterbacks right now.

Yesterday, ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported that Cutler would be willing to delay his broadcast career at Fox in order to play for Gase. Although, Darlington added that Cutler would only consider making this move if he gets the chance to be the full-time starting quarterback for the entire year.

Darlington’s sources added that Cutler views the Dolphins as the only practice quarterback job he would consider at this point. However, Miami has yet to consider bringing him in.

Other options like Colin Kaepernick have come up as possibilities for Miami to consider, depending on Tannehill’s status.

Matt Moore will operate as the team’s starting quarterback for at least until they know how bad Tannehill’s knee injury is, but some still believe Moore could open the year as the team’s starter.

Cutler, 33, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2006. He spent three years in Denver before he was traded to the Bears in 2009. He was in the fourth year of his seven-year, $126.7 million contract that included $54 million guaranteed when the Bears cut him loose at the start of the 2017 league year.

In 2016, Cutler appeared in five games and throw for 1,059 yards while completing 59.1 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding Cutler and the Dolphins as the news is available.
