Dolphins Aren’t Ruling Out Pursuing Evan Mathis At Some Point

Dolphins executive VP Mike Tannenbaum didn’t rule out the idea of possibly pursuing free agent G Evan Mathis at some point in time.

“I’ll never rule out getting this team better,” Tannenbaum said, via the Palm Beach Post.

However, Tannenbaum added that he would like to see what some of their current guards are capable of before considering someone like Mathis.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan told reporters this past weekend that they’ve spoken to Mathis’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus in recent weeks, per Albert Breer.

However, Maccagnan seemed to indicated that Mathis’ asking price is currently too high for their liking.

Manish Mehta mentions that if Mathis were to come down in terms of his desired salary, the Jets “will be in the mix.”

Mathis said previously that he expects negotiations to “ramp up” with possible suitors after gauging what his options are. With this in mind, it sounds like there’s at least a chance he would be willing to come down in terms of his asking price for the right opportunity.

Mathis, 33, is by far the best available free agent offensive lineman and should have a decent market for his services.

Last year, Mathis appeared in nine games for the Eagles after he dealt with an MCL injury. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 guard out of 78 qualifying players.

We have Mathis listed as the No. 1 player in our Top 25 Best Available Free Agents list.
