Dolphins Claim DE/OLB Quinton Coples Off Waivers From Jets

The Miami Dolphins have claimed DE/OLB Quinton Coples off of waivers from the Jets on Tuesday, according to Mike Garafolo.

The Jets somewhat surprisingly cut Coples loose on Monday, due to him being a poor fit for Todd Bowles defensive system.

It’s worth mentioning that Coples was drafted by current Dolphins VP Mike Tannebaum when he was the Jets’ general manager, so there’s a clear connection here.

Coples, 25, is in the fourth year of his four-year, $8.803 million rookie contract. that’s fully guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $1,515,381 for the 2015 season.

The Jets elected to pick up Coples’ fifth-year option back in April, which would have paid him $7.8 million for the 2016 season. However, this figure was guaranteed for injury only.

This season, Coples has appeared in 10 games and recorded eight tackles, no sacks, and a fumble recovery for the Jets. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 43 outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense out of 51 qualifying players.
