Falcons Reach An Agreement With DE Osi Umenyiora

Update

Jay Glazer is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement with free agent DE Osi Umenyiora on a two-year deal.

We had Umenyiora listed as the No. 6 player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

Update:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter adds that “it’s not a question of if Giants DE Osi Umenyiora will sign with the Atlanta Falcons. It’s when.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff confirmed that the team is in discussions with free agent DE Osi Umenyiora’s representatives.

“We’re in the process of having discussions with his representatives,” said Dimitroff, per D. Orlando Ledbetter. “There’s nothing new to report at this point. We have a solid relationship with CAA (Creative Artists Agency) and our discussions are fluid and amicable.”

All indications have pointed to Umenyiora signing with the Falcons for almost a week now, so it make sense for a deal to be agreed upon in the next few days.

Update:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Falcons are in the process of making a “strong push” to sign free agent DE Osi Umenyiora.

Schefter adds that they’re working to try to get this deal done before the end of the weekend.

Atlanta has been the one team with the most interest in Osi up to this point. Miami has been keeping tabs on the situation, but has never been seen as a true favorite sign him.

Umenyiora would be a great fit for their 4-3 defensive front and a decent enough replacement for John Abraham.

Update:

Mike Garafolo reports that free agent Osi Umenyiora visited with the Falcons on Wednesday.

This is Umenyiora’s first reported visit, but Garafolo adds that there’s no word as to whether or not he was offered a contract.

A previous report indicated that the Dolphins are keeping an eye on Osi, so the amount of interest in him is at least picking up in recent days.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have spent “considerable time” studying free agent DE Osi Umenyiora and have even been in contact with his representatives.

Salguero adds that other defensive end options like Elvis Dumervil and John Abraham are less likely to be signed.

Miami hasn’t been in contact with Dumervil, who already has serious interest from the Ravens and Broncos, so unless his asking price decreases in the coming days, it’s fair to say he won’t be coming to Miami.

Abraham, 35, is “not a fit” for the Dolphins, according to Salguero. He also mentions that the previous reports of Abraham visiting the team are false.

If Miami passes on signing someone like Umenyiora, there’s a good chance that they could consider using their No. 12 overall pick on the position now that they’ve added wide receivers Mike Wallace, Brandon Gibson and re-signed Brian Hartline.
