Dolphins Could Pursue A Trade For G Evan Mathis After OTAs?

According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Dolphins could consider the idea of pursuing a deal for Eagles veteran G Evan Mathis after their offseason workout program has concluded.

Evan Mathis is the guy to continue to watch because he has not shown up at the Eagles offseason workout program,” Marvez said on the Marc Hochman Show. “Essentially Evan Mathis is frozen. I wouldn’t be surprised after the minicamp takes place if the Dolphins make a call to the Eagles to see what can be done to potentially acquire Evan Mathis.

“Evan is a really good player who’s in his 30s — he’s also represented if I’m not mistaken by Drew Rosenhaus which doesn’t hurt things having him locally either. I just have to think Evan Mathis is the guy who could be available for trade and might not even cost you that much to get him.”

It’s worth mentioning that Drew Rosenhaus recently referred to possibility of his client ending up with the Dolphins as not a “strong possibility.”

“I’ve been given permission by the Eagles to shop Evans,” Rosenhaus said, via CBS Miami. “We thought we had a trade with another team leading up to the Draft. It was not the Dolphins.

“It kind of fell through based on what the team did in the draft but right now it doesn’t appear the Dolphins are a strong possibility. We’ve never really gotten close on a trade with the Dolphins.”

Mathis, 33, still has another two years remaining on his five-year, $25 million contract that included $7 million guaranteed. He stands to make another $5.5 million in 2015 and another $6 million in 2016.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Mathis would free up $4.5 million in available cap space while creating $2 million in dead money.

Last year, Mathis appeared in nine games for the Eagles after he dealt with an MCL injury. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 guard out of 78 qualifying players.
