Dolphins Have Discussed Extension For DE Cameron Wake

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have internally discussed the possibility of signing veteran DE Cameron Wake‘s contract through the 2019 season.

However, Jackson adds that Miami has yet to do anything regarding Wake’s contract up to this point.

The Dolphins do have some depth at defensive end now with Wake, Robert Quinn, Andre Branch and Charles Harris, but one benefit to signing Wake to an extension is that would give them some more cap space to work with.

Wake, 36, wound up signing on with the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State back in 2005. He lasted just a few months in New York before joining the BC Lion for the 2017 season.

After two years in the CFL, the Dolphins signed Wake to a contract for the 2009 season and he’s spent the past nine years in Miami.

Wake is in the final year of his two-year, $19 million contract that included $11 million guaranteed and is set to make a base salary of $8 million for the 2019 season. He would be an unrestricted free agent next year.

In 2017, Wake appeared in all 16 games for the Dolphins and recorded 36 tackles and 10.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 edge rusher out of qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding an extension for Wake as the news is available.
