Dolphins Officialy Exercise C Mike Pouncey’s Fifth-Year Option This Week

Update

———–

Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel reports that the Dolphins are expected to pick up C Mike Pouncey‘s fifth-year option before Saturday’s deadline.

This coincides with previous report from Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald who mentioned as much a few months ago.

Doing so would run the Dolphins  $7.438 for the 2015 season, but that figure is only guaranteed for injury and wouldn’t prevent them from negotiating a long-term contract.

There was some speculation that Miami could consider parting ways with Pouncey after the Ted Wells report came out, but that seems like a highly unlikely scenario at this point in time.

Pouncey, 24, is clearly the Dolphins best offensive lineman and one of their few young pieces to build around on the offensive side of the ball. He could be facing punishment from the league for his involvement in the Jonathan MartinRichie Incognito situation.

Even so, the Dolphins are still expected to work a long-term contract with Pouncey at some point in the near future.

Last year, Pro Football Focus rated Pouncey as the No. 13 center in the league and a particularly solid pass protector.
