Dolphins Fire OC Mike Sherman

Miami Dolphins HC Joe Philbin announced on Monday that OC Mike Sherman has been relieved of his duties.

  • Armando Salguero reports that Philbin is “definitely safe.
  • Ian Rapoport mentions that Packers QB coach Ben McAdoo could be a candidate for the Dolphins OC job.
  • Albert Breer mentions that Philbin could be more involved in the team’s offense moving forward.

“I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins,” Philbin said in a statement released by the Dolphins. “Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future.

Reports from over the weekend indicated that Philbin was reluctant to make changes to his staff including firing Sherman, but it appears as though his return was contingent upon Sherman’s removal.

GM Jeff Ireland is expected to retain his job, which comes as a surprise. Owner Stephen Ross apparently wants to give Philbin and Ireland another shot in 2014 before considering another overhaul.

Under Sherman, the Dolphins ranked No. 27 in the league in terms of total yards in each of the past two seasons.
