Dolphins Have Had “Preliminary” Contract Talks With RB Lamar Miller

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have had “preliminary discussions” with RB Lamar Miller regarding a potential contract extension.

However, Jackson adds that there has yet to be any no in-depth negotiations between the two parties.

Jackson mentions that the Dolphins may have a potential replacement for Miller in fifth-round pick Jay Ajayi, who is reportedly viewed within the team as having the potential to be a three-down back.

According to Jackson, the Dolphins still value Miller as a player, but NFL teams have shown a reluctance to pay big money for running backs in recent years.

Miller, 24, is entering the final year of his four-year, $2.58 million rookie contract that included a $486,000 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent next year.

In 2014, Miller ran for 1,099 yards on 216 carries (5.1 YPC) to go along with 38 receptions for 275 yards receiving and nine total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 15 running back out of 57 qualifying players.
