Dolphins Looking To Open Extension Talks With WR Jarvis Landry

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins and the representatives for WR Jarvis Landry are either already in preliminary talks regarding an extension right now or about to open discussions at some point in the near future.

The Dolphins resisted negotiating with Landry this summer, even though he was entering the final year of his contract.

Salguero explains that Miami wanted Landry to improve his professionalism and in his game preparation along with fitting in their receiver room. Beyond that, the Dolphins are obviously aware that DeVante Parker will need a new contract soon enough, so they wanted to be sure that signing Landry long-term was the right move for them.

Salguero writes that while Landry managed to answer a number of questions the team had about him, Parker hasn’t lived up to expectations this year.

Sources have told Salguero that even though the Dolphins don’t have a lot of cap room to work with right now, a deal is still possible if they can reach an agreement on the structure of the contract.

It’s worth mentioning that the Dolphins will have the franchise tag at their disposal next year. Although, that is projected to run them $15,682,000 fully guaranteed for the 2018 season.

Landry, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2014. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $3.5 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $893,852 for the 2017 season.

In 2017, Landry has appeared in 13 games and caught 88 passes for 745 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. He has also contributed 81 kick return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 13 receiver out of 116 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 25 – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.

We’ll have more regarding a new deal between the Dolphins and Landry as the news is available.
