Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross Announces HC Joe Philbin Will Be Back Next Year

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross told reporters after Sunday’s game that they will be keeping Joe Philbin in place for another season.

“Here’s a Christmas present,” Ross said, per Andrew Abramson. “You don’t have to ask me anymore. He has one year left on contract and is coming back.

“I believe in what we’re building, Coach Philbin is coming back next year,” Ross told the team in the locker room.

Many assumed that Miami would be in the market for another head coach, especially now that they have been eliminated from the postseason, but it looks like Philbin will get one more shot to prove he’s their long-term solution.

Jim Harbaugh’s name has consistently been linked to the Dolphins, seeing as his time in San Francisco is widely expected to come to an end and Miami aggressively pursued him a few years ago.

However, Ross has shown a lot of support for Philbin over the years and it would take a lot in terms of salary of draft compensation to work out a deal with the 49ers.

Since being hired in 2012, Phlibin has won 47.8 percent of his games (22-24) and has yet to post a winning record, even though that could change next week.
