Dolphins “Pessimistic” About Their Chances of Retaining OT Jake Long?

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that those who have spoken with the Dolphins have informed him that the team is “pessimistic” about their chances of re-signing LT Jake Long.

Jackson adds that Long is believed to be looking for a deal that would pay him $10 million annually and reportedly “scoffed” at Miami’s first offer.

Long, 27, suffered a season-ending triceps injury this year, but there were questions about his overall effectiveness even before he was hurt. The fact that there are a number of quality options available on the open market most likely won’t help his chances of securing that kind of a deal.

The Dolphins are reportedly shopping for value in terms of their own free agents, so unless Long is willing to offer them some kind of discount, it seems fairly likely he’ll be playing elsewhere at the start of training camp.

We have Long listed as the No. 19 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

    • Certainly it’s a possibility. The Bears are in a good position because it’s going to be a buyers market, assuming that majority of the available OT’s aren’t franchised. Chicago could be taking a risk by passing on an OT in the free agency with the hope of walking away with an impact player in the draft. I think they would have to consider the idea of signing Long, especially if the market pushes down his asking price.
