Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that the Dolphins are exercising QB Ryan Tannehill‘s fifth-year option before next week’s deadline.

Tannehill’s option will run the Dolphins close to $16 million for the 2016 season. However, this figure is non-guaranteed and won’t prevent them from negotiating a long-term extension.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported a few weeks ago that Miami plans to turn their attention to signing Tannehill to a long-term contract before the start of the 2015 season.

According to Rapoport, the two sides have had no formal discussions up to this point, but the Dolphins plan to focus in on an extension for Tannehill this summer.

Some have mentioned in recent months that Tannehill may have to settle for a similar type of contract to the deals signed by Bengals QB Andy Dalton and 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, but we’ll have to see how talks go in the coming months and if this is even a consideration.

Tannehill, 26, was finishing up his four-year, $12.668 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $660,000 to go along with a $1.457 million roster bonus next season.

In 2014, Tannehill threw for 4,045 yards while completing 66.4 percent of his passes to go along with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 11 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players last year.
