Dolphins Place LB Dannell Ellerbe On I.R. & Sign LB Kelvin Sheppard

The Miami Dolphins officially announced Monday that they have placed LB Dannell Ellerbe on injured reserve and signed veteran LB Kelvin Sheppard to a contract.

Dolphins HC Joe Philbin told reporters on Monday that they are placing LB Dannell Ellerbe on injured reserve and signing veteran LB Kelvin Sheppard to a contract, per James Walker.

Ellerbe went down with a hip injury during the Dolphins win over the Patriots on Sunday.

Ellerbe, 28, is in the second year of his five-year, $34.75 million that included $14 million guaranteed. He will make $6 million for the 2014 season.

Sheppard, 26, is a former third-round pick of the Buffalo Bills. However, he last just a few years with the team before he was traded to the Colts in return for Jerry Hughes. The Colts wound up releasing Sheppard last weekend as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players.

In 2013, Sheppard recorded 46 tackles, one sacks, and a pass defense over the course of 15 games.
