Jason Cole of B/R, citing two sources with knowledge of the situation, reports that the Dolphins may decide to pull their transition tag from DE Olivier Vernon.

Cole mentions that one consideration for the Dolphins pulling the tag from Vernon is that if another team signs him to an offer sheet and Miami elects not to match the offer, they wouldn’t receive a compensatory pick for him in 2017.

The Dolphins reportedly don’t want to overpay Vernon and would prefer to get a compensatory pick for him rather than nothing.

One way or another, Vernon will have a decent amount of interesting, considering the need for pass-rushers around the league and the total amount of available cap space to work with this year.

The transition tag will run the DolphinsĀ $12.734Ā million for the 2016 and gives them the ability to match any offer Vernon signs on the open market.

Vernon, 25, played out the final year of his four-year, $2,818,080 rookie contractĀ and is one of the best available defensive ends in a relatively limited pool of pass rushers.

In 2015, Vernon appeared in 15 games and recorded 55 tackles and seven sacks for the Dolphins.Ā Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 1Ā defensive end in a 4-3 systemĀ out of 51 qualifying players.
