Dolphins Sign LB Kiko Alonso To Three-Year Extension Worth $29M In Total

Update:

The Dolphins have already announced the new extension for restricted free agent LB Kiko Alonso.

Joe Schad is reporting that the Dolphins have reached an agreement with restricted free agent LB Kiko Alonso on a three-year extension worth a total of $29 million and includes $18.5 million guaranteed.

  • Mike Garafolo reports that Alonso’s deal is a three-year extension worth $25 million on top of his one-year, restricted tender worth $3.9 million.

The two sides were reportedly interested in getting a long-term extension in place before the start of the 2017 and looks like they managed to get a deal finalized just a few weeks after the free agent market opened.

The Dolphins used a first-round tender on Alonso that would have cost them $3.91 million for the 2017 season had they not agreed to an extension.

Alonso, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Bills back in 2013. He signed a four-year, $4,300,401 but injuries have prevented him from accruing the necessary four years of experience to be an unrestricted free agent.

The Bills traded to the Eagles in return for RB LeSean McCoy back in 2015. From there, Alonso was traded to the Dolphins along with Byron Maxwell in return for a first-round pick.

In 2016, Alonso appeared in 15 games and recorded 115 tackles, two interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble, four recoveries and four pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 48 linebacker out of 87 qualifying players.
