Dolphins Still Interested In Re-Signing TE Dion Sims, Despite Pending Trade For Julius Thomas

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, citing a source with direct knowledge, reports that the Dolphins are still interested in re-signing TE Dion Sims, despite closing in on a trade with the Jaguars for TE Julius Thomas.

It’s worth mentioning that the Thomas trade is not a done deal and he still needs to pass a physical for the team after an injury-filled 2016 season.

However, Thomas presence could impact Sims’ willingness to return to the Dolphins, as he has said previously he believes he’s proven to be a starting-caliber tight end in the NFL.

Sims previously mentioned that Dolphins HC Adam Gase told him they want to re-sign him to be their No. 1 tight end.

“He told me he wants me back as a No. 1,” Sims said, via the Miami Herald. “I want to be back. I have obviously proven myself to be a starting tight end in the league and want to continue in that role. I’ve done some great things this year and improved a lot.”

Even if the Dolphins bring Sims back, Salguero could still see them bringing in another to tight end to go along with their other options at the position.

There will be some notable free agent tight ends for the Dolphins to consider this offseason. However, Salguero doesn’t think guys like Vernon Davis, Jared Cook and Martellus Bennett will ultimately end up in Miami.

Instead, Salguero suggests Seahawks TE Luke Willson as someone who could be a good fit for the Dolphins.

Sims, 25, is a former fourth-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2013. He has played out his four-year, $2,627,552 contract and is now in position to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

In 2016, Sims appeared in 14 games for the Dolphins and caught 26 passes for 256 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 38 tight end out of 63 qualifying players.
