Doug Free Free Expected To Be Back With The Cowboys Next Season

Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas expects the Cowboys RT Doug Free to be back with the team next season, despite their obvious cap issues and some suspect play from Free in the past.

The Cowboys are projected to be over the cap by close to $24 million, which means all options to shed salary are on the table.

However, Archer mentions that Free actually played pretty well in 2013 and it’s not as though the Cowboys have a replacement for him currently on their roster. Archer adds that it would make sense for Dallas to consider drafting an eventual replacement, but doesn’t see releasing Free as the team’s best option.

Free, 30, agreed to a $3.5 million pay cut to remain with the Cowboys last year. He will make $3.5 million for the 2014 season and carries a $6.52 million cap figure. Releasing free would actually result in a $480,000 cap hit, according to OverTheCap.com, so I really can’t see that being an option for Dallas.

  1. He played well surprisingly last year so this is good. Lets see if the offensive guard position gets fixed and then the boys can be more balanced run/pass
