Drew Brees Next In Line For A Big Deal?

With their star quarterback in the final year of his current deal, the New Orleans Saints are reported to be in negotiations with Drew Brees. Brees told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that his agent and the New Orleans Saints are currently in “ongoing” contract discussions.

Brees was asked about Vicks new contract.

I did see it,” Brees said. “It looks like a nice contract. Obviously I don’t know any of the details other than the six years and $100 million.

ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas gives his take on the Saints approach to re-signing Brees.

Considered one of the game’s top quarterbacks and a staple in the New Orleans community, Brees likely would be among the game’s top-paid players under any new deal,” writes Yasinskas. “New England’s Tom Brady and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning each average about $18 million per year and Philadelphia’s Michael Vick recently agreed to a six-year deal reportedly worth $100 million. The next group of quarterbacks on the salary scale — Jay CutlerPhilip Rivers and Eli Manning — average between $14 million and $16 million a year.”

This could leave Brees slightly behind the contracts of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in the $16 to $17 million per season range. The again the Saints could give him a similar contract to that of Brady or Manning.
