Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that newly signed QB Drew Stanton is hoping that the Jets will either release or trade him now that they’ve added Tim Tebow to their roster.

The Jets chose to sign Stanton to backup Mark Sanchez a little less than one week ago, and Stanton was obviously under the assumption that he would get a shot to be the team’s No. 2 quarterback. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum even referred to Stanton as an “ascending player ” but yesterday, he specifically mentioned that Tebow will now be the teams’ backup quarterback.

“When we signed Drew, obviously this was not contemplated in that decision,” Tannenbaum said on Wednesday night.  “When you get an unexpected opportunity to add a player like Tim, you have to take advantage of that.”

New York gave Stanton a one-year deal worth $1.25 million despite drawing limited interest on the open market. If he’s going to be a third-string quarterback, he can probably find a better situation than the Jets considering that they still have Greg McElroy.
