Dwight Freeney Still Hoping To Re-Sign With Cardinals, 95% Chance He Plays In 2016

Free agent DE/OLB Dwight Freeney mentioned during an interview with Sirius XM NFL Radio that he would love to re-sign with the Cardinals and is hoping they extend him an offer.

• Freeney said that he had “good visits“ with the Bengals and Falcons over the past two weeks, but he isn’t a big fan of the free agent process.
• According to Freeney, the plan all along was that he wouldn’t sign with either the Bengals or Falcons during his visit, as where ever he lands will likely be his last stop in the NFL.
• Freeney added that there’s a 95 percent chance he plays in 2016.

Both the Bengals and Falcons could offer Freeney the ability to move back to defensive end, rather than playing outside linebacker as he has for the past few years. However, he’s coming off of a productive year with the Cardinals, and the could give him the best opportunity to get back to a Super Bowl.

Arizona has bolstered their edge-rusher depth this offseason by trading for Chandler Jones, so there’s obviously some question about whether they would seriously be interested in bringing him back.

Freeney, 36, is a former first-round pick of the Colts back in 2002. After spending 11 years in Indianapolis, Freeney signed on with the Chargers as a free agent and spent two seasons in San Diego.

Last year, the Cardinals signed him to a one-year contract and were rewarded with a productive year from the veteran pass rusher.

In 2015, Freeney recorded nine tackles, eight sacks and three forced fumbles over the course of 11 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 51 edge rusher out of qualifying 110 players.
