Eagles DE Chris Long Weighing Retirement?

Field Yates reported this morning that the Eagles had reworked DE Chris Long‘s contract in recent days and guaranteed him $3 million for the 2018 season.

According to Yates, Long’s base salary was increased to $2.5 million guaranteed from the $1 million non-guaranteed he was set to make. The Eagles also eliminated the $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses and $750,000 in incentives including in his deal.

However, Michael Silver reports that Long hasn’t accepted the offer yet and a decision from Long is expected to come later this week. According to Silver, this offer would pay Long $4 million guaranteed in 2018 and extend his deal through 2019.

Silver adds that Long is reportedly wondering what his role will be in the team’s defense now that they’ve acquired DE Michael Bennett and in theory could decide to retire or try to find another team to play for, even though he’s under contract with the Eagles.

Long, 32, is a former No. 2 overall pick of the Rams back in 2008. He spent eight years with the Rams before he was cut loose in 2016 and later signed a one-year contract with the Patriots.

The Eagles signed Long to a two-year contract last year and he’s set to make a base salary of $1 million for the 2018 season.

In 2017, Long appeared in all 16 games and recorded 28 tackles, five sacks and four forced fumbles for the Eagles. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 30 edge rusher out of 106 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Long and the Eagles as the news is available.
