Eagles Fielding Trade Offers For LB Mychal Kendricks

Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com, citing two people familiar with the situation, reports that the Eagles are “making it clear” to NFL teams at the Combine that they are open to trading LB Mychal Kendricks.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, considering that Jimmy Kempski reported a month ago that the Eagles were willing to trade Kendricks this offseason. Kempski added that the belief is that there will likely be interest from teams around the league in a potential deal.

It remains to be seen what the Eagles could get in a trade for Kendricks, but Kempski suggested a mid- to late-round draft pick could be a reasonable return.

Another possibility for the Eagles could be to designate Kendricks as a post-June 1 release, which would free up $5 million of cap space and $1.6 million in dead money. Although, Kempski mentions that it remains to be seen if the Eagles would release Kendricks if they’re unable to find an appealing trade offer from another team.

Kendricks hasn’t developed into the impact player they were hoping he would when they used a high pick on him several years ago. Beyond that, his production wasn’t in line with the five-year, $29.896 million contract he signed with the Eagles back in 2015.

Kendricks, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Eagles back in 2012. He’s entering the third year of his five-year, $29.896 million contract that included $16.4 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $4.85 million for the 2016 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading or releasing Kendricks would free up $1.8 million of available cap space while creating $4.8 million in dead money. However, the Eagles could improve those figures to $5 million in cap savings and just $1.6 million in dead money by designating him as a post-June 1 release.

In 2016, Kendricks appeared in 15 games for the Eagles and recorded 32 tackles, no sacks or interceptions, a fumble recovery and a pass defense. According to Pro Football Focus, Kendricks was limited to playing 273 snaps, but was close to an average player based on their ratings.

We’ll have more regarding a potential trade involving Kendricks as the news is available.
